The cost of the 2024 Tesla Model Y in Australia has been cut by up to $8500 with the arrival of the updated model, offering revised styling and new colours.

The Model Y now opens from $63,900 plus on-road costs, $1500 less than before – while prices of the Long Range and Performance all-wheel-drive variants have been slashed by $5500 and $8500 respectively.

Australia has finally received the updated Model Y unveiled by Tesla in China in October 2023.

However, Australia has missed out on the majority of the changes shown in China – including quicker acceleration for the base model, longer driving ranges, and new interior trim.

This update is expected to be followed by a more comprehensive facelift for the Model Y later this year or sometime next year, similar to the exterior, interior and suspension changes rolled out to the Model 3 sedan in 2023.

Changes in Australia are limited to a black finish for the covers on the standard-fit 19-inch 'Gemini' wheels, and three new colours: stealth grey ($2300 extra), quicksilver ($2600) and ultra red ($2600).

These new finishes replace midnight silver metallic and red multi-coat paint options on the previous model. Pearl white remains the only free colour, unlike in some other markets.

All other changes seen overseas – including a 1.0-second quicker 0-100km/h time for the Model Y RWD, slightly longer driving ranges, interior ambient lighting, and new fabric dashboard trim (pictured below) – are not offered locally.

The changes come after the Tesla Model Y outsold the Toyota HiLux for the first time in Australia last month, in one of the best months on record for electric car sales.

The updated Model Y is mechanically unchanged, with the entry-level model – which has historically accounted for 80 per cent of sales – powered by a 194kW/340Nm (or 220kW, according to some sources) electric motor and circa-60kWh battery pack.

It is claimed to be capable of 0-100km/h in 6.9 seconds, have a WLTP driving range of 455km, and a top speed of 217km/h.

The Long Range and Performance share a circa-82kWh battery, with dual motors developing an estimated 366kW in the former, and 393kW in the latter, for 0-100km/h times of 5.0 and 3.7 seconds, WLTP ranges of 533km and 514km, and top speeds of 217km/h and 250km/h respectively.

Standard features in the Model Y include a 15-inch touchscreen, synthetic leather-look upholstery, heated and power-adjustable front seats, 19-inch wheels, a tinted glass roof, adaptive cruise control, and lane-centring assist.

The 2024 Tesla Model Y update is available to order now, with deliveries due by June.
