Air Fryer French Toast Bites (1)

I absolutely love French toast, but I do not love the drippy egg mess that comes with it. I more of a, put it in the air fryer, shake it around, and eat! type of person.

And so, my love of French toast plus my love of air fryers has led to this: Air Fryer French Toast Bites. They are truly easier to make and clean up than the stove top version.

What are the ingredients in these Air Fryer French Toast Bites?

The ingredients for these Air Fryer French Toast Bites are so simple, you *might* already have them in your fridge and pantry! Here’s what I used for this recipe:

  • eggs– Classic French toast requirement! I used 3 large eggs in this recipe.
  • milk of choice – During testing, I tried both oat milk and unsweetened almond milk, which is why I’m labeling this recipe as dairy free. Use whatever milk you already have!
  • pure maple syrup– Adding just a touch of maple syrup to the egg mixture adds a tiny hint of sweetness so these little bites taste wonderful plain as well! I opted for this over other sweeteners because I already had it out for topping!
  • salt– Since there’s a lot of sugar going on here, adding a touch of salt helps tone down the sweetness and bring out the flavors.
  • hearty bread– For this recipe, you can use any kind of bread, but thicker, heartier bread is better in my opinion. If you’re using a lighter bread, make sure it’s a couple days old. Older, drier bread is better able to absorb the egg mixture without getting totally soggy and falling apart!
  • ground cinnamon – Use any spices you like, I added cinnamon for a classic taste!
  • avocado oil or parchment paper– The egg mixture may stick to the air fryer basket, so I suggest wiping the basket with oil, or lining with air fryer safe parchment paper.
  • for topping: powdered sugar, maple syrup, strawberries– Top with your favorites! I suggest male syrup and powdered sugar for the most classic look.

How do you make these Air Fryer French Toast Bites?

These Air Fryer French Toast Bites are so much easier to make than classic French toast in my opinion. No need to dip bread slices individually. In this recipe, we put it all in a bowl, mix, then air fry!

To start, whisk the eggs, milk, maple syrup and salt until well combined. I love adding a hint of sweetness to the egg mixture itself so it can soak into the bread.

Next, add all the bread cubes to the egg mixture bowl. Use tongs or a rubber spatula to mix well until the egg mixture has been soaked up and no dry spots remain on the bread cubes. This could take a minute or two!

Sprinkle cinnamon over the bread cubes as you stir in order to evenly disperse the cinnamon. In my testing, putting the cinnamon in with the egg mixture resulted in giant clumps of cinnamon rather than a nice dusting on each piece.

If lots of egg mixture remains in the bottom of the bowl, let the bread cubes sit in egg mixture for 2-3 minutes, then continue stirring until most of it is soaked up. This could happen if your bread is on the drier side, but that’s totally fine!

For this recipe, I’ve found that it’s helpful to grease the inside of the air fryer basket. Egg is especially susceptible to sticking! Use a paper towel to generously wipe avocado oil on the bottom of the air fryer basket, or line with air fryer safe parchment paper.

Place the soaked bread cubes into the air fryer in a single layer, taking care to not let the bread cubes touch as much as possible. Air fry at 350F for 7-10 minutes, checking and shaking the basket after 5 minutes.

Separate any cubes stuck together and continue cooking until the the french toast bites are crispy and golden brown.

Serve these French toast bites immediately with maple syrup and powdered sugar! Peanut butter, strawberries, bananas or anything like that would work too! Enjoy 🙂

Can I use a different kind of bread instead of hearty white?

Technically yes, you can use any kind of bread here, but thicker, heartier bread is better in my opinion.

If you’re using a lighter bread, make sure it’s a couple days old. Slightly older, drier bread is better able to absorb the egg mixture without getting totally soggy and falling apart!

Testing notes:

While testing these Air Fryer French Toast Bites, I noticed a couple things I want to share with you!

  • Adding the cinnamon later in the recipe helps reduce big clumps of cinnamon that can occur if you add the cinnamon directly to the egg mixture first. I got a much better result but gently sprinkling the cinnamon on after the bread cubes had soaked up some of the liquid.
  • With older, thicker bread, you might need an extra tablespoon of milk. If you’re using pre-sliced bread or fresher bread, stick with just 2 tablespoons of milk.

Alternative customization ideas:

  • Add some extract to the egg mixture (okay I really want to try this!). For example, add peppermint extract and top with chocolate sauce!
  • Use your favorite kind of bread!

Which air fryer do you recommend?

The air fryer I have currently, and the one that is pictured in this post is the Cosori XL 5.8 qt Air Fryer (affiliate link!). If you’re going to invest in an air fryer to cook things for 2 or more people, you should opt for a larger size like this one, in my opinion!

I previously had a slightly smaller Philips Air Fryer with a metal grate basket which I liked, but I prefer the larger Cosori model with the nonstick coated basket.

This is the air fryer I use and recommend to everyone I know. I prefer the larger 5.8 quart size, since most things need to be cooked in a single layer!
