What is Bread Pudding?

Bread Pudding is a tasty casserole of layered cubes of bread that are soaked in a custard spiced cream mixture and baked to a perfectly soft consistency. There is usually some sort of fruit mixed in such as raisins, but I much prefer apples to raisins in this recipe.

To top it all off it is generally served with a warm sauce. In this recipe a delicious Caramel Sauce is the perfect addition to apples for this bread pudding recipe.

When do you eat Apple Bread Pudding?

This bread pudding recipe is amazing served for breakfast. Imaging waking up to the smells of cinnamon and apples baking!! This bread pudding recipe is always perfect for brunch, it is so filling and perfect as the main dish. Apple Bread Pudding is perfect for feeding a crowd! You can get 10-12 servings from one pan.

I have also served this Apple Bread Pudding for dessert. The Caramel Sauce is delicious served over this bread pudding alone or you could add a little scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream on top of the bread pudding and serve with a drizzle of warm caramel sauce.

What kind of Bread for Bread Pudding?

Bread Pudding is a great way to use up those last few slices in the bread bag that always seem to get tossed. I like to take those and put them in a bag in the freezer to save for tasty recipes like this Apple Bread Pudding.

For this recipe, I just used a regular loaf of white sandwich bread. It worked perfectly! The bread quickly soaked up the cream mixture and baked to the perfect consistency. I like to use sandwich bread because it is easy to find and something I usually already have on hand.

Other kinds of bread you can use for bread pudding are sweet breads, brioche, french or challah bread.

Ingredients for Apple Bread Pudding recipe

Here’s what you’ll need to make the Bread Pudding recipe:

  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 1/2 Cups Milk
  • 2 Cups Heavy Cream
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • 6 Cups Cubed Bread
  • 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/4 Cup Butter
  • 2 Cups Peeled and Sliced Apples

Ingredients for Bread Pudding Sauce

Here’s what you’ll need to make the Caramel sauce for topping the bread pudding:

–1/2 Cup Heavy Cream

–1/2 Cup Brown Sugar

–1 Teaspoon Vanilla

–4 Tablespoons Butter

What kind of Apples to use in Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding?

You can really use any kind of apples you prefer for this Apple Bread Pudding Recipe. I like to use Gala apples when I make this. I think they are not too tart and just sweet enough to not over power the recipe. Other varieties that work well are Honey Crisp and Pink Lady apples.

How to Make Bread Pudding

This Apple Bread Pudding Recipe comes together with just a few simple ingredients as noted above. Start with slicing the bread into about 1 inch cubes. For this recipe I used about 12 slices of sandwich bread.

In a medium mixing bowl combine the cream, eggs, milk, sugar and cinnamon, then gently mix in the bread cubes and allow them to soak up the cream.

In a well greased 9 x 13 inch pan lay down one layer of the creamy bread crumbs and top with a layer of thinly sliced apple pieces. Continue layering again with one last layer of the creamy bread crumbs topped with a layer of apple slices.

In a separate bowl you will combine the melted butter and remaining sugar and cinnamon. With a spoon, drizzle this over the top of the bread pudding just before baking.

Bake in a 350ºF oven for 50 minutes. When the timer goes off, you want that bread pudding to still be a little jiggly in the center. Allow the bread pudding to rest 10-15 minutes before serving. Just enough time for you to get the delicious Caramel Sauce ready.

Can I make Apple Bread Pudding Ahead?

You can definitely make this a day or two ahead of when you need it. To make this Apple Bread Pudding ahead, completely make and bake the recipe, allow to cool, then cover and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve. This can be reheated in a 350ºF degree oven, covered with foil for 15 minutes or until heated through. This bread pudding can also be easily reheated in the microwave.

How Long Does Apple Cinnamon Bread Pudding Last?

This Apple Bread Pudding can be stored covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. I have found that it is best consumed within 1-2 days of baking.

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 6 cups bread (about 10 slices)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and sliced (about 3 apples)

Caramel Sauce

  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 4 tbsp butter

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350ºF. Prepare a 9 x 13 inch baking dish by greasing with butter or cooking spray.

  • Prepare bread by slicing into one inch cubes.

  • In a large mixing bowl whisk the eggs until bubbly. Add in the milk and cream and whisk to combine.

  • Measure out the sugar and remove one tablespoon and combine with the melted butter. Add remaining to the milk and egg mixture.

  • Add 1/2 tsp cinnamon to the melted butter and 1/2 tsp to the eggs and milk.

  • Stir the egg and milk mixture until the cinnamon and sugar is well combined.

  • Add in the cubed bread pieces until they are all well coated. Folding with a wooden spoon or spatula careful to not break up the bread too much.

  • To the prepared baking dish add half of the creamy bread mixture, top with a layer of sliced apples. Add another layer on top emptying all of the contents of the mixing bowl. Layer with another layer of sliced apples. Drizzle with the melted butter, sugar and cinnamon mixture.

  • Bake for 50 minutes. When the bread pudding is done, you want it to jiggle just a little in the center. Allow to rest for 10-15 minutes until ready to serve.

Caramel Sauce

  • In a medium sauce pan over medium-high heat melt the butter. Add in the cream, brown sugar and vanilla, stir to combine until all the sugar is incorporated. Bring to a boil.

  • Turn the heat down to low and allow the caramel to simmer until it has thickened to a syrup consistency. Remove from heat and serve.
