What is the purpose of a poster? ›

The main function of a poster is to capture a moving audience with a message. When designing a poster, plan its design carefully. You will have a short amount of time to attract and hold your readers attention.

Successful posters grab attention. The eye-catching nature of them makes them memorable and, therefore, a fantastic marketing tool. They're also great for prompting impulse purchases. If a customer sees promotional material online, it often doesn't spark the same rapid response as in person.

DON'T vary the type sizes and/or typefaces excessively throughout the poster. For example, don't use something different for every bit of text and graphics. DO design your poster as if you were designing the layout for a magazine or newspaper.

Images should be the main part of the poster. Use these to draw attention to your poster and keep people's attention. These can often be used to explain a concept or technique, rather than explaining it using text.

At its core, a poster is made up of four key features: a title, graphic(s), text, and white space. Layout, flow, and color affect the order and style of these four key features.

The standard format of a poster follows that of an oral scientific presentation and includes Introduction, Methods, Results, Conclusions; Recommendations. A poster, like an oral presentation, cannot (and should not) contain all information you have on the topic.

A single visual element can create a centerpiece which draws the eye into the communication. Graphic images are better suited for poster and flyer communications as they generally provide a high contract and saturation which will pop off the page to quickly attract attention.
