Jim Williams, the treasurer of the booster club, recalls the moment he saw an ad for Utah Grizzlies hockey, a discovery he compares to finding plutonium. It was a spark that ignited a passion for the sport and the team.
"It was like a hidden gem we stumbled upon," Williams said. "And from that moment, we were hooked."
And for Dawn Gerber, a visitor from Nevada, it was love at first game. She and her family fell not only for the Grizzlies but for the sport of hockey itself.
But here's where it gets controversial... The excitement of the team's final home opener was tinged with sadness. Fans couldn't shake the feeling that something special was coming to an end.
"We're heartbroken," Gerber confessed. "This has been a tradition, a joy we always looked forward to."
The Utah Grizzlies, a beloved institution, are skating off to New Jersey, leaving behind a legacy and a community.
A Journey to New Jersey
Emma McFarland, a fan and hockey player, shares a unique connection to the team's new home. With a family history in New Jersey and a brother who is the equipment manager, she's excited for the opportunities ahead. But the move is a double-edged sword.
"We're upset to see them go," she said. "It's a part of our lives that's ending."

"We hoped they'd stay, but we knew it was likely they'd leave," Butler said. "It's a tough pill to swallow."
Williams, a season ticket holder for 19 years, will miss the community he built around the Grizzlies. The team brought people together, creating a unique bond.
"We made friends through this team. We cheered loud, and people joined us because of it," he joked. "We even had our own chants!"
The concern now is the loss of an affordable sports option. Butler worries that the community may not be able to afford the Mammoth's games, a sentiment shared by many.
"The Grizzlies were accessible to all. We're losing that sense of community," Butler added.
Cherishing the Memories
In the meantime, fans are cherishing their memories. The booster club's annual holiday party, with its hilarious rookie carol singing, is a cherished tradition.
"It's these moments that we'll hold onto," Butler said. "The laughter, the joy, it's irreplaceable."
For Gerber, the Grizzlies provided an escape, a much-needed break from a difficult time. Her daughter's battle with breast cancer found solace in the fun and excitement of the games.
"It was a blessing to have this team in our lives," she said. "A true gift."
The booster club plans to continue supporting the sport, with their remaining funds going towards a charity for kids' hockey.
The Grizzlies' final game is scheduled for April 11 against the Rapid City Rush. A bittersweet end to a beautiful journey.
