Excellent recipe - delicious! Unfortunately I don't live near a source of good, fresh clams, so I used 4 cans of chopped clams, and added bottled clam juice to the juice from the canned clams to make enough broth.

I've made this recipe a few times now using watercress instead of spinach. Delicious!

I just made this without bacon, and it was incredible! The flavors were all so delicious together, and I'd almost fear that inclusion of pork would overpower the lovely clam flavor.

Very pleasant and tasty.Light, good flavor from clam broth and used Penzys seasoned salt to add depth.Added shrimp from the low country as my wife is not that enamored with clams but this worked great.

Really enjoyed this. I used kale instead of spinach (added it with the potatoes). Canned clams instead of fresh (three five oz. cans and two bottles of clam juice). Also added two cobs worth of fresh corn near the very end for some sweetness. Delicious.

4 lbs Manila Clams

Delicious! Made with canned minced clams and threw in 3 leftover grilled shrimp ! Not having clam juice used a tsp of fish sauce and better than bouillon. The zest and dill set it up beautifully. Wd be great as a general seafood/fish soup. I wd leave out spinach and sub peas and then sub saffron for zest/dill. Definitely a keeper!

Need at least twice the stated amount of Manila clams!

Had a bunch of Napa cabbage about to go bad that made a really decent addition. Realized at the last minute that I didn't have any lemons, but had some pickled radish that worked for brightness.

This was a delicious, fresh take on clam chowder and perfect for spring. We’re located in northern Portugal now, so a few ingredients are not easy to come by (spinach, dill, and cayenne). I subbed local greens that are common for soup here, instead, along with parsley and red pepper flakes, and it was fantastic. Looking forward to letting the leftovers develop more flavor overnight and will be making it again soon,

Like so many NYTs recipes, it takes a LOT longer because of all the veggie chopping, grating, etc (plus cooking the clams ahead of time). But definitely worth all the effort!

I used about 2/3 potatoes and 1/3 carrots for a little sweetness and another color. I used canned clams because the clams in our mountains are all fossilized. Next time I think I’ll try Tobasco for the vinegar zing. I was surprised at how much the spinach added to the taste and interest. It’s a doagain.

This delicious soup adapted well to ingredients I had on hand. Instead of fresh clams, I used a bottle of Bar Harbor clam juice and shrimp-shell broth ( a can of BH chopped sea clams). Instead of spinach at the end, I added kale towards the end of cooking. Instead of bacon lardons, I cooked bacon in a separate skillet and used the chopped crisp bacon as a topping, sauteeing cod filets in the bacon grease to put atop the soup. Dill seed cooked in the broth (instead of fresh dill) also worked.

I made this for guests tonight and everyone raved about it. Delicious!! We had one vegetarian so I substituted the bacon with facon, otherwise per recipe. Be sure to have some crusty bread on hand to mop up the extra chowder. Yum!!

Followed the recipe for the most part, but added the juice of the zested lemon, added some additional veg broth because it was pretty thick, and ended up adding the crème fraîche and zest/dill to the main pot instead of as a topping. Great, bright flavors with the dill, lemon, and crème fraîche! An interesting take on clam chowder for sure!

Can this be made without bacon or does it make the dish?

I love this recipe! I always make it without the creme fraiche. Perfection.
