Prepare to be inspired by Dave Coulier's incredible journey and resilience in the face of adversity. Cancer has struck again, but this time, it's personal.
The beloved actor, known for his role in the iconic show "Full House," has been diagnosed with tongue cancer, just months after beating non-Hodgkin lymphoma. At 66 years old, Coulier is no stranger to life's challenges, but this latest battle has been an emotional rollercoaster.
"This is a different beast altogether," Coulier shares with USA TODAY. "It came as a huge shock, but I'm determined to fight it."
But here's where it gets controversial... Coulier initially believed that his two cancers were linked, attributing the tongue cancer to the chemotherapy treatment for lymphoma. However, medical experts clarified that one had nothing to do with the other. Coulier was diagnosed with p16 squamous cell carcinoma, a type of cancer that can have various causes, including the HPV virus.
In October, Coulier underwent a painful surgery to remove the upper layer of his tongue. He recalls, "I didn't want to speak for the first few weeks. It was a challenging time, but my team of doctors, including a 'swallow coach,' helped me through the rehabilitation process."
With early detection, Coulier's prognosis is positive, with a 90% survival rate. But the past 12 months have been an emotional nightmare, as he puts it. "No one should have to go through this alone."
Coulier credits his friends and family, especially his wife Melissa, for getting him through the psychological battle. He also became a grandfather in March, welcoming a baby boy into the family. His grandson, he says, is a shining light in his life, giving him a lot to live for.
"I want to be there for him, playing catch in the backyard. I'm determined to beat this for him and for all the women in my life who've battled cancer."
And this is the part most people miss... Coulier's health journey has inspired him to co-found AwearMarket, a wellness and holistic marketplace. He's on a mission to promote toxin-free, clean-ingredient products, and his nutrition has become a top priority.
"I want to help others find better options. It's not about being preachy; it's about navigating this journey together."
Coulier's venture is also partnering with the V Foundation for cancer research, founded by former college basketball coach Jim Valvano. AwearMarket customers can contribute to cancer research by "rounding up" their purchases, with the proceeds going to the V Foundation.
Despite his personal battles, Coulier remains committed to his work and will be appearing at this weekend's Steel City Con in Pittsburgh alongside his "Full House" co-stars. His motivation, he reveals, comes from the strength of the women in his life, including his mother, sister, and niece, who lost their battles with cancer, and his sister Karen, who is currently fighting the disease.
"Their strength keeps me going. I know they're with me, and that gives me the courage to keep fighting."
