The Disneyland Haunted Mansion now has now been closed since early 2024. Typically the Disneyland Haunted Mansion closes at for a short amount of time to remove the Nightmare Before Christmas-themed Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay from the attraction but this year the closure is related to bigger construction project to reshape the areas around the mansion.

Late last year, Disney revealed new details about a big expansion of the Disneyland Haunted Mansion area to redevelop the area around the Haunted Mansion attraction to improve guest flow, add in an elevator for wheelchair users to exit the attraction, and to add in a new store. You can read more about this Haunted Mansion construction below.

Work is ongoing during the Haunted Mansion closure. We have a look at the Haunted Mansion construction and new information from Disney that states that the Haunted Mansion will reopen by a specific date.

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Closure

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Closure 2024 - Dates, Why It's Closed, What's Coming (1)

Disneyland closed the Haunted Mansion on January 22, 2024. We did this construction update recently looking at the progress on the mansion. The progress on the outside doesn't look too promising and it appears that the area that was previously the queue is still completely dirt.

That said, Disney has now made a big announcement that guarantees that the Haunted Mansion will not be closed for too much longer. See details in the next section.

With the closure of the Haunted Mansion, two of the major attractions in this corner of the park will be closed. There is still no Splash Mountain reopening date set for when the ride will become Tiana's Bayou Adventure. Disney just confirmed that the Tiana's Bayou Adventure attraction will not open until “later in 2024” at Disneyland so we can expect to see this area with the two attractions closed for at least a little while.

That leads us to wonder…

When Will Disneyland Haunted Mansion Reopen?

Disneyland Haunted Mansion Closure 2024 - Dates, Why It's Closed, What's Coming (2)

Haunted Mansion UPDATE! Disney has confirmed that the Disneyland Haunted Mansion will reopen by the first day of the Halloween at Disneyland season. Disney has not explicitly stated the exact date that the mansion will reopen – it could be even earlier than the first day – but as of this morning they provided a new update stating that the Haunted Mansion Holiday will be open for the first day of Disneyland Halloween on August 23, 2024. When I asked for confirmation that this would be the official reopening date for the Haunted Mansion, a Disneyland spokesperson stated that this was not the official reopening announcement but that it would be ready for Halloween at the parks.

Disney also shared that the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction will be available with a virtual queue only when it first returns. This is likely because, unfortunately, the full queue work will not be complete when the attraction is initially reopened.

From the visible progress that we can see at the mansion the exterior work on the attraction has not really gotten underway and the new store coming to the attraction – details below – has not even begun to take shape.

This is big news because many had started to take the slower visible progress on the grounds of the Haunted Mansion as a sign that the reopening would be pushed out far further into the year. It's good news that they are stating that all of this can be completed within two months from this announcement.

This could also mean that Disneyland will reopen the attraction a few days or weeks earlier than the official start to the Halloween season in order to get additional capacity back online. If the ride is ready, I would not be surprised if they soft launch the attraction by early August. We know that many of Disney's biggest fans in the world will be in attendance at the D23 Expo this year and it wouldn't be surprising to us if they were trying to have it open by that weekend.

We anticipate that the Haunted Mansion will reopen just in time for the Halloween season. This news basically confirms that the normal Haunted Mansion will not return until January 2025 when the Haunted Mansion Holiday overlay comes down from the attraction. It also confirms our hunch that the holiday decorations have remained up in the mansion throughout this construction period.

Now, here's a little more on the background that we already had around the Haunted Mansion closure.

Typically the Haunted Mansion Holiday attraction closes every year in early January around the least day of the holiday season as we detail in our Disneyland refurbishments and closures article. Some of the changes, which we'll share a little more on below won't be quick and will be structural changes made to the attraction building.

As of May 2024 we have not seen progress on the exterior queue area of the mansion and it is very much still a dirt construction site. There is likely lots of activity in the areas of the mansion that we cannot see including the exit accessibility work that they are doing.

Here's our PREDICTION from before we had the above information! Right on the nose.Knowing how the Disney marketing machine works, we are currently assuming that the attraction is working on a timeline towards reopening at the beginning of the Disneyland 2024 Halloween season. This would mean that the attraction would reopen with the Nightmare Before Christmas decorations that make up the Haunted Mansion Holiday offering. We expect that these decorations have remained up inside the mansion. Back in January when they closed the mansion they definitely had a good sense of their project plan for the closure. Even with a rough estimate of the timeline of the construction project they wouldn't take down the holiday decorations just to eventually have a month or two of non-holiday mansion just to put them back up again. So, that likely means no regular Haunted Mansion attraction until 2025. Our best guess is that the attraction will reopen on August 23, 2024 if the construction timeline goes as planned.

What we do know is that when Disneyland shared all the 2024 special events they mentioned that Disneyland Halloween would include “uniquely themed attractions” so we can assume that the work will be all done in time for the August 23, 2023 beginning of Disneyland Halloween 2024.

What is the Haunted Mansion Construction Coming to Disneyland?

Disney previously announced that Haunted Mansion will be getting some new additions that will “build on the story and lore” of the beloved attraction. The construction during the Haunted Mansion closure will add an expanded outdoor queue and a new retail shop adjacent to the attraction's exit. Construction will also introduce new additions to improve the accessibility of these areas, including an elevator exit from the attraction for guests with disabilities.

The expansion will connect to the local legend of the Haunted Mansion being first built by a prosperous sea captain and new gardens inspired by Master Gracey, Madame Leota, and the one-eyed cat. The gardens will feature unique elements like a water fountain, gazebo, themed statuary and landscaping, and more. The pet cemetery and horse-drawn funeral hearse will still be featured. There will also be enhancements made to the plaza adjacent to Tiana's Palace to create a “new, elegant park-like setting” that will be a place to rest and enjoy live entertainment. You can see the concept art for this area below:

Importantly for the construction closure timeline for Haunted Mansion, they will also be adding an elevator to the exit of the attraction. This could cause the longest part of the closure as it is structural and work could end up block the attraction from running.

We are looking forward to seeing these new additions added to the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland!
