Imagine being so thrilled about a career move that you can't contain your excitement—that's exactly how linebacker Jaelan Phillips felt after being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. But it’s Phillips who stole the spotlight with his infectious enthusiasm.
Following his first practice with the team, Phillips couldn’t hold back his joy. “I thought I was excited Day 1, talk to me now,” he said. “This is literally the greatest thing that has happened to me in my whole life, probably. It’s just awesome. The guys are awesome, everybody’s been super welcoming. I love the environment here. I love the vibe here.”
Phillips isn’t just a feel-good story—he’s a strategic addition. With 26 career sacks over four-plus seasons, the 2021 first-round pick from UCLA is expected to inject life into the Eagles’ pass rush, which currently ranks a disappointing 25th in the NFL with just 16 sacks. “Explosive player, able to get to the quarterback, violent in the run game, can create a lot of disruption,” said coach Nick Sirianni. “That’s exactly how we like to play that position.”
And this is the part most people miss: Phillips’ familiarity with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio could be a secret weapon. Having worked under Fangio in Miami during the 2023 season, Phillips knows the system inside and out. “Fangio’s scheme gives us the freedom to just pin our ears back and have that aggressive rushing mindset,” Phillips explained.
