Mexican coffee is famous all over the world. The Mexican coffee zone is located in the states of Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca. All with climates and mountainous areas suitable to produce quality coffee. As the day of the dead and other Latinoculture celebrations approach, I wanted to embrace the importance of coffee and its traditions.

Inspired by the Mexican coffee zone and the love I have for coffee, I have created a delicious recipe: an Iced Coffee Mexican Style. A refreshing out of the ordinary beverage. In Mexican cuisine, we like to use aromatic spices such as cinnamon and anise. As well as using the citrus peel to give, in addition to the aroma, flavor to drinks as tasty as this Iced Coffee Mexican Style.

This recipe requires freshly ground Mexican coffee beans, cinnamon, star anise, orange peel, turbinado sugar or piloncillo (known in other countries as panela or melao), ice and water. This coffee recipe is simple to prepare and can be enjoyed as agua fresca or as a snack to catch the second air or energy in the day.

The coffee culture and its consumption is something that is deeply rooted in our my Mexican culture and traditions. I remember that my great-grandmother loved to have coffee in the afternoons and it was a ritual. The coffee was made in an aluminum percolator, and the preferred coffee was roasted grain brought from Coatepec, Veracruz. A family favorite.

In Veracruz, coffee is something vital. Coffee is enjoyed in the morning and in the afternoon and served in a famous place called La Parroquia. If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Mexico and visit Veracruz, you must go to Los Portales and enjoy the great milk and coffee, as well as tosavor some refried bean picaditas at La Parroquia coffee shop.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 scoops of freshly ground coffee
  • 1 tablespoon of turbinado sugar or piloncillo add to taste
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 orange sliced
  • 4 cups of hot water
  • 4 cups of ice

Instructions

  • Use a Frenchpress and add the coffee, the sugar, the cinnamon, the star anise,and the orange zest.

  • Pour hot water and stir. Place the Frenchpress lid and let it rest for 10 minutes. Then press and coffee will be ready to serve.

  • In a pitcher add ice and pour the coffee. Add ice to two glasses and serve the iced coffee. Garnish with orange rounds and cinnamon sticks.

  • Use an electric gooseneck kettle to boil the water and set the temperature at 200 degrees Fahrenheit required to make perfect coffee on the French press.
  • This coffee can be sugar-free by using stevia or other sugar-free option.
  • Tequila, rum or a cinnamonliqueurcould be used for turning this iced coffee into a co*cktail.
