my birthday dinner party details - Kirsten and co (2024)

About a month ago, Scott told me he had something planned for my birthday. He knows I don’t really look forward to mybirthday – long, boring story as to why – but this year Scott wanted that to change.

So he decided to organise a dinner party. He told me who he had invited and that was all I knew.

I tried to quiz him for information, asking all sorts of annoying thingsquestions like,

  • “What are you going to cook?”
  • “We don’t have a table big enough for 12 people. Where will everyone sit?”
  • “I don’t think we have matching cutlery for 12 people. We’re going to need matching cutlery. Would you like me to get matching cutlery?”

Each of my questionswere met with a very polite, “I’ve got this.” Eyeroll chasers may also have been involved. Or there could’ve been something in Scott’s eye on 47 different occasions. Really, it was hard to tell.

Turns out the quizzing was not required as he really did have everything under control.

Would you just look at what he put together.

THE BIRTHDAY DINNER PARTY DETAILS

The Table Setting

I mean, can we just take a minute to discuss the colour scheme. Yes, he had an actual colour scheme. It was white, navy blue and gold, with blush pink roses thrown in for good measure.

Pretty much everything on the table was purchased from Kmart:

  • white tablecloths
  • navy blue napkins
  • gold cutlery
  • white plates
  • tea light candle holders
  • vases (glass storage jars with cork lids which Scott removed)

The gold rimmed glasses and champagne bucket were from our cupboards.

The roses were purchased from our local flower farm.

Our dining room table seats 8. In order to provide seating for 11, Scottjoined our dining room and outdoor tables together. However they were different widths and heights. Not happy with this situation, Scott whipped up to Bunnings and after he’d inhaled one of their sausages with a co*ke chaser (I’m assuming), he purchased a sheet of MDF.

Once home, the tool set I gave Scott for Christmas (how’s that for romantic?) was put to good use as he sliced and diced that MDF into atemporary table top arrangement.

Thisinvolved making our dining room table wider by adding a slab of measured and cut MDF on top of it. He then raised the glass top of our outdoor table by sliding 4 carefully cut cubes of MDF under each corner.

The tablecloths, which Scott had washed AND ironed the night before, were then placed on top and voila! He had cleverly created one long table.

The Menu

Things kicked off with pre-dinner drinks and nibbles outside. I forgot to take photos of the food then but Scott made platters of delicious pork and beef meatballs and chicken and vegetable rice paper rolls for us to help ourselves to.

Dinner was a very tasty (and healthy!) quinoa, chicken and avocado salad, garnished with fresh watercress and lime. We washed it down with champagne, French Martinis and possibly a shot or two of tequila.

Dessert was a delicious red velvet cake, purchased from one of my favourite bakeries.

The Fun

It was SUCH a fun night. Not everyone knew each other, but that didn’t matter. We chatted and laughed the night away and it really was a night to remember.

Unfortunately three of my gorgeous girlfriends were unable to make it, but the 7 who were there didn’t mind (too much!) when I pulled out the tripod and told them to get ready for a group photo.

They were all intriguedwith the whole phone as a remote control situation, so naturally I gave them a quick tutorial while also taking a sneaky photo…

We then had a bit of fun getting a group shot or three.

Read this postto discover how to take your own fab photos using your phone as a remote.

The Outfit

Sundays The Label Sateen Dress in Pink, $89 purchased from Neon Laundry(Roomy fit. I’m wearing a size 10)

Jolie and Deen Melinda Earrings, $69.95 purchased from Neon Laundry

The Husband Of The Year

Big call, except it’s really not. This guy has pretty much won HOTY every year since I married him way back in 1997.

A more thoughtful, loving, hard-working, generous bloke you will not meet. Everything he does is for the kids and I. He truly is the most selfless man I know.

How do you celebrate your birthday? Have you thrown a dinner party lately? Tell me all the fun things.
