Ohio Standards 101 – The Ohio Standard (2024)

Education impacts how our children grow and become prepared for success in college or on the job. To improve that education, Ohio’s students are learning under standards in mathematics, English, science, and social studies.

The mathematics and English standards, also known as the Common Core State Standards, were developed collaboratively by teachers and other educators from Ohio, along with many states. Teachers and education leaders also worked together to develop Ohio-specific standards for science and social studies. Ohio’s Learning Standards are designed to challenge and motivate our students, preparing them for success in college, on the job, and in life.

A: In 2010, the Ohio State Board of Education incorporated the Common Core State Standards in mathematics and English and state-developed standards in science and social studies into the state’s newerlearning standards. The standards are learning goals for the knowledge and skills all young Ohioans need to succeed in our competitive economy.

Q: What are the Common Core State Standards?

A: The Common Core State Standards, incorporated into Ohio’sLearning Standards by Ohio’s State Board of Education in 2010, establish clear expectations about what students should know and be able to do when completing grades K–12 in mathematics and English Language Arts. They are essential to preparing our children for success in college, careers, and life.

Standards Revision Process

The Ohio Department of Education is currently in the process of updating Ohio’s Learning Standards. In 2016, Ohio’s English language arts and mathematics standards were reviewed by the public and revised changes, made by educator working groups and advisory committees, were presented to the Ohio House and Senate Education Committees as well as the State Board of Education. A similar review process is currently underway regarding Ohio’s science, social studies and financial literacy standards. More information and a timeline on this process can be found here.

Show Me the Standards

One way to consider the standards is to ask:

“What wouldn’t I want my child or grandchild to know that’s in these standards?”

Here are a few of the standards, provided by the Ohio Department of Education, so that you can answer that question:

  3. Analyze how differences in the points of view of the characters and the audience or reader (e.g., created through the use of dramatic irony) create such effects as suspense or humor.
