I made it but left out the canned chicken I don't like combining beef with chicken and I hate canned chicken. That being said, with the chicken left out I loved it.

Hi , really like your yummy things. Yours are healthy also. Share one more. A guy went hunting with a hunting group of guys each one cooking each night. He was to fix chili but forgot a few things. He went ended up browning hamburger meat with onions.Poured in kidney beans. He saw a large bottle of Kraft Spicy BBQ Sauce and poured in. Put on low in a 6 qt crock. Put on high for one hour then turned on low.

They all left coming back 5 hours later rain soaked , tired and starving. Smelled chili before hitting cabin door. Least to say none left. He made it for us at work on the grave yard shift...delicious! I made at home only adding diced tomatoes , garlic powder. Had no peppers at the time but family LOVED it. They decided they liked it better than my regular. Been cooking for 15 years now. That one bottle of BBQ Sauce is ready made , quick ready to go after meat n onions browned. Just saying even left meat off adding mushrooms and was even healthier for us all. Give a try. Happy Thanksgiving 2017 to all. Kat

FAQs

Should liquid cover stew in crock pot? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Do you have to brown stew beef before putting in crock pot? ›

If you are making a slow-cooked recipe that calls for ground beef, like chili, beef stew, or meat sauce, browning the meat beforehand makes a huge difference. Ground meat should always be browned in a skillet and drained before adding it to the slow cooker with the other ingredients.

How do I get the best results from a slow cooker? ›

Reduce liquid when using a slow cooker

It should just cover the meat and vegetables. Don't overfill your slow cooker, or it may start leaking out the top, and the food won't cook so well. Half to two-thirds full is ideal – certainly no more than three-quarters.

Can you cook beef stew too long in slow cooker? ›

While slow cooker recipes are designed to cook for extended periods of time, they can still become overcooked if left on the wrong setting for too long. In general, it's best to stick to the indicated cook time on the recipe you're following.

Do potatoes go on top or bottom of meat in a crockpot? ›

Place firm, slow-cooking root vegetables like potatoes and carrots at the bottom of the crock and pile the meat on top. Set the heat level: A general rule of thumb is that cooking on the low setting (170 degrees F for most models) takes about twice as long as cooking on high (280 degrees F on most models).

How much liquid should be in a stew? ›

The Broth – We usually use about 4 cups of broth and then top it off with just enough water to cover the meat and veggies. Our favorite ratio is 2 cups of beef stock and 2 cups of chicken stock – we find all beef stock to be a little intense and all chicken stock to be a little thin, so we split the difference.

What happens if you don't brown meat before a slow cooker? ›

Though it's not a requirement to brown the meat before adding it to a slow cooker (unless the recipe specifies such a step), Cuisine at Home explains that doing so will enhance the meat's color, textures, and flavors.

When to add potatoes to a slow cooker? ›

Tender vegetables such as zucchini and beans can be added to your dish in last ¾ - 1 hour of cooking when cooking on High, or 2 hours if cooking on Low. Hard, starchy vegetables like potato and carrots are best added around 3 hours before the meal is done if cooking on High, and 4 hours on Low.

Can you put raw beef in stew? ›

You should never throw your raw cubes of beef into the stew pot. You must sear the cubes first in a pan to brown them and begin building that rich flavor. It's important not to brown them too lightly—sear them until there's a dark crust on each side of the meat cubes.

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Is it better to cook on high or low in a slow cooker? ›

Certainly, foods will cook faster on high than on low. However, for all-day cooking or for less-tender cuts, you may want to use the low setting. It's safe to cook foods on low the entire time -- if you're leaving for work, for example, and preparation time is limited.

Should you stir a slow cooker? ›

Resist the urge. Every time you lift the lid, heat escapes and adds up to 30 minutes longer to your cook time. Slow cookers are made so you don't have to stir with the low cooking temperature, so relax. Leave it.

What vegetables should not be added to a slow cooker? ›

Tender vegetables

Vegetables such as peas, asparagus and peppers can become a flavorless, mushy mess in a slow cooker.

Is it better to cook stew on low or high in slow cooker? ›

Tips for making the best beef stew

Browning the beef in a skillet beforehand will bring out even more flavor. Cook it on low. While many slow cooker recipes can be made on high for 3-4 hours, I highly recommend cooking this beef stew on low for the full 7-8 hours. This will ensure that the beef gets nice and tender.

Can I leave stew in the crockpot overnight? ›

The short answer: Yes. slow cookers are made to cook food for extensive periods of time (some can be left up to 24 hours). But, of course, follow safe practices outlined in your instruction manual, and keep the appliance on low or warm, as opposed to high, overnight.

Does the liquid in a slow cooker need to cover the meat? ›

There is no need to cover the meat in liquid when cooking with a slow cooker, you only need enough liquid to cover the base of the slow cooker as the meat and vegetables will release liquid as they cook.

Does keeping a lid off a slow cooker thicken the sauce? ›

Take the lid off

Place the cooker on a high setting, and open the lid for 30-45 minutes to let excess moisture cook off. The liquid will reduce, leaving you with a thick and delicious gravy or sauce. (Tip: This trick can also be applied for thickening stews, or when you've accidentally added too much liquid.)

Does stew thicken with lid on or off? ›

To thicken a soup, stew, or sauce, leaving the lid uncovered is ideal. "It must be off, or semi-covered, if you are slowing down the reduction process," says Stephen Chavez, chef-instructor at the Institute of Culinary Education.

Will stew thicken in slow cooker? ›

The nature of slow cookers is that they don't ever get very hot, so this means that any thickener may not, depending on the model, ever get hot enough for the starch to swell – remember that both flour and cornflour need to be boiled. It may be necessary to transfer the sauce or gravy to a saucepan in order to boil it.
