My top 10 Malta restaurants right now
1. Sole by Tarragon
St. George’s Bay, St. Julian’s |€€€€
Following the success that Tarragon has received throughout the years, Sole Seabar by Tarragon has taken its place as its successor. It has now taken centre stage as one of St Julian’s hot spots where you can truly unwind and enjoy an evening on the water’s edge.
The location perfectly complements the seafood menu, which is brimming with award-winning dishes by Chef Marvin Gauci. Adding to this, the co*cktail and lists feature several showstoppers, all bearing Chef Marvin’s creative flair.
Put simply, Sole by Tarragon doesn’t disappoint!
2. Root 81
22A Telgha tas-Saqqajja Rabat | €€€-€€€€ | Michelin Guide listed
Under the direction of Chef Patron Robert Cassar, Root 81 offers a culinary journey of the senses. Nestled in a beautifully restored farmhouse in Rabat, the name of this restaurant is a direct reference to the old bus route that connected Rabat to Valletta for over 91 years. However, the name also carries the restaurant’s ethos that ‘good food starts from its root”.
Both the À La Carte and Tasting Menu already showcase some of the finest culinary masterpieces made with the freshest of ingredients. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, you can also opt for the Balcony Experience Menu, where you will enjoy a more intimate dining experience in one of the restaurant’s private balconies.
Definitely one to try!
3. The Harbour Club
4/5 Barriera Wharf, Valletta | €€€ | Michelin Guide listed
It’s no surprise that The Harbour Club is listed in the Michelin guide: This Valletta restaurant offers creative flair in its dishes that’s hard to find elsewhere while maintaining consistently high standards in the food it serves, wine selection offered and the service provided.
Not only is the dining experience one of the best I’ve tried in the capital, but the location is also unique, alongside the quaint harbourside. Book an outside table during the warmer months to get the best views, though keep in mind their outside terrace is small. Book well in advance.
Tip: Ideal in summer as the terrace overlooks the Grand Harbour and allows for magnificent views.
4. Noni
211 Republic Street, Valletta | €€€€ | Michelin Star
Chef Jonathan Brincat serves some of the finest dishes, with elevated blends of Maltese and Mediterranean cuisine.
With a concise but varied menu, seasonal ingredients play a starring role.
While staff ensure your evening is a pleasant one, the historical, rustic setting adds to a memorable experience you’ll want to repeat. I certainly have, and will continue to do so.
5. Ta Tona’
Triq ir-Rebħa, Mġarr (Gozo) | €€-€€€
Ta’ Tona is a lovely family-run restaurant located just a few steps away from the Mġarr Harbour, Gozo.
With its array of fish and seafood specials, pasta dishes, grills, platters and plant-based options, Ta’ Tona is an ideal spot for the whole family.
Some dishes include Calamari Fritti, Local King Prawns, Ravioli Filled with Sheep Cheese, and Duck Breast. However, keep in mind that the menu is subject to change according to the availability of the ingredients.
The homemade deconstructed cannolo is a stunning dessert, so make sure you leave room!
To sum up, the location is great, especially if you’ve just arrived or leaving Gozo, the food is divine, and it is reasonably priced. Highly recommended!
6. Rubino
53, Old Bakery Street, Valletta | €€€ | Michelin Guide – Bib Gourmand
Rubino is a small bistro in Valletta that serves authentic dishes, mostly Mediterranean/European cuisine.
Although its characterful facade (proudly displaying its heritage as a 1906-founded confectionery shop) doesn’t allude to it, this little restaurant is a real gem.
With an excellent menu and wine list, this is a great choice for fine dining in the capital.
7. Bahia
Corinthia Palace Hotel De Paule Avenue, Balzan | €€€€ | Michelin Star
A dining experience at Bahia truly captures the joy and all the emotion one feels when enjoying a meal with a loved one on a special occasion.

Get ready to indulge in an informal fine-dining experience at Risette. Located within Casa Ellul, an experience at Risette centres around the fusion of French cuisine with Japanese ingredients and techniques.
You can opt for the à la carte menu or the tasting menu; irrespective of the culinary experience you choose, you are guaranteed a feast of the senses. Highly recommended!
9. Azar
Triq Manwel Dimech Sliema | €€€
Right in the heart of Sliema, you’ll find Azar; a restaurant offering an international dining experience with a laidback sophistication.
As per their ethos, Azar is “a culinary experience that is born of flame”. Under the direction of Chef Michele Zahra, the restaurant’s main focus is on how traditional cooking methods can create the most scrumptious food.
10. Amami
Marfa Road, Mellieħa | €€€
Few restaurants in Malta do Asian, let alone Japanese, cuisine justice but Amami gets it very, very right.
Located in the corner of Għadira Bay (at Mellieħa), you can enjoy high-quality Japanese dishes with a sea view.
This is a firm favourite with me and it deserves all the praise it gets.

Tips and guide for eating out in Malta
- You can book online for most restaurants. To help you out, we’ve included links for all hand-picked restaurants. With just a few clicks, you can book for a particular date/time and indicate any dietary requirements.
- Book well in advance, especially for weekend bookings and around public holidays.
- Some restaurants that offer a fine dining experience do not accept children, so that’s something to keep in mind if you have a family.
- Similarly, you’ll find restaurants that accept pets. It’s best to always check beforehand if this is possible.
- Most restaurants open for dinner at 6 or 7 pm, and will rarely take calls for reservations during the day. Either try your luck if it’s a normal weekday or call the evening before.
- Even in tourist hotspots,it’s not common to be billed for cover charges. If you do encounter such restaurants, obviously don’t feel obliged to tip.
- Speaking of tipping:Yes, tipping is common and usually, a tip of 5-10% is just fine.
- Major credit cards are widely acceptedat restaurants in Malta.
- Saturday nights are, as you’d expect, the busiest, closely followed by Sunday lunch and often you’d need to make your reservation several days in advance for the more popular restaurants.
- When you get offered specials, even though you can ask for a price estimate they will always tell you it depends on the weight of the protein chosen. You can count on having to pay higher prices than you’d expect in those instances but you can always ask in advance.
- If you or someone within your dinner party has specific dietary requirements, it’s best to confirm with the restaurant beforehand that options are available for you.
- You’ll find plenty of restaurants that are wheelchair accessible. However, it’s good to keep in mind that in some areas like Valletta, there might be a couple of steps to get to the restaurant.

Nenu the Artisan Baker is a highly popular restaurant in Valletta, offering a wide variety of typically Maltese foods and dishes that go beyond baked foods. Very tasty, genuine ingredients and even the restaurant itself is a good establishment for a quality dinner
When I was there with a few Maltese friends there seemed to be a sense of nostalgia towards some of the dishes they had last tasted when cooked by their Nanna (grandmother). There’s no better rating of the quality of Maltese food than that, I suppose!

Tal-Petut is a unique little restaurant and a food experience I highly recommend you try.
Chef Donald and his team serve a variety of traditionally prepared Maltese dishes and bite-size tastes, set within an old townhouse in the heart of the old village of Birgu(part of the Three Cities).
The staff is attentive, always happy to tell you a little more about the food they serve you and it’s a lovely dining experience in a homely setting.
DISCLAIMER: My reviews of the above restaurants were collected in late 2023. Restaurants come and go and change owners regularly, so although I update these reviews whenever I’m aware of changes in quality, I cannot guarantee this info is 100% accurate and up to date all the time.

My Great Respect to the Author!
Me and my girlfriend are about to go for a trip to Malta and I found your articles EXTREMELY helpful!
Thank you for your huge effort and indispensable tips!If I may recommend, I would also make an article devoted to special dishes worth trying in Malta. I am sure that a person with such handful experience would have much to share in this regard.
Best wishes!Reply
I’d like to second the recommendation of Rebekah’s in Mellieha. We were dining there in October 2021, and it’s been one of the best places I’ve ever visited for fine dining.
Service is super attentive, but not intrusive, the food was Michelin Star worthy, great local wines – it isn’t cheap but in our opinion worth every penny.Reply
Thanks for leaving a review Angie, happy to hear! 🙂

Hi Edward, thanks to your recommendation I have had an amazing time trying great food all over Malta. Unfortunately, as a solo traveller, I didn’t get a table at Da Pippo as they appear to be only available for couples or groups. However, I had a superb lunch at Legligin after this incident. Thanks again for your blog, it was a tremendous help for my stay in Malta.

We are coming to Malta end of October and we would enjoy food and culture experiences with locals, as well as updated recommendations for restaurants that would cover a range of different styles: traditional, street food and more creative Maltese cuisine.

We have had lovely experiences in the Ocean Basket restaurant in Qawra. It was so good we went back multiple times! The seafood sharing platters were incredibly good value, extremely delicious and fresh, we even had the same platter twice. The views are beautiful with a clear cut view of the sea and sky which is just beautiful as the sun begins to set. The restaurant is decorated beautifully with a clean blue and white interior and the staff are very friendly. Could not recommend this restaurant enough!

Thank you for the tip India, I’ve added it to my “to test” list. 😉

Hi Edward,
At first thanks for the great information you provide on your blog they have been very helpful throughout our 1 week visit to Malta!
There is definitely one restaurant missing in your list: Bouquet Garni in Mellieħa.
We lived nearby and went in cause of the excellent Tripadvisor comments. It is a small family run restaurant with great passionate service and outstanding food (especially the grilled octopus)

Thank you for chipping in that suggestion Patrick, I’ve added it to my list to try!

Hi Edward,
I’m visiting Mellieha with my partner from 16th to 19th June. Any great authentic dinner recommendations for our final night? Something with great views and traditional food (seafood?) Would also appreciate other lunch/dinner recommendations in the same area. We probably won’t be renting a car so something in the area would be great..
Thanks,
Ash.

Hi Ash, the two restaurants I can think of are the Hilltop, located in the main road of Mellieha and Munchies, at Mellieha Bay. The first for the traditional food (although not a wide selection), the second for the view (AND the food, even if it’s not necessarily traditional Maltese food).

Hi Edward,
Great tips. Do you know of any restaurants in the Mellieħa / St Pauls area that are suitable for vegetarians?
ThanksReply
Hi Georgina, the only restaurants that come to mind in those areas (that serve at least a few dishes specifically for vegetarians) are:
* Mezzaluna Bistro & Pizzeria (St. Paul’s Bay)
* House of Spice (Indian – Buġibba)
* One80 Kitchen & Lounge (Mellieħa)If you’ll be renting a car I can also recommend Agliolio who have a decent choice of vegetarian dishes. They’re part of the Radisson Golden Sands at Golden Bay, which is a 10-15 min drive away from St. Paul’s Bay.

As a solo vegetarian traveller, are there any restaurants you would recommend in particular?
Reply
Hi Niki, if location isn’t an issue, these are the places that are most vegetarian-friendly (that I know of):
* The Grassy Hopper (Valletta, Gżira)
* Pure (Sliema)
* Mint (Sliema)
* Tate (Birgu)Reply
Went with four friends to Tal-Majjistra in Mġarr. The rabbit dish was excellent. The whole evening was excellent actually, the food was really good, the service was great and the food was served with a smile. All in all quite recommendable.

Thanks for the tip Josef. They do know how to prepare a tasty rabbit dish in Mġarr!

Hi, I want to celebrate my wife’s 50th birthday with 4 others. Do you have any suggestions?
We are foodie people staying Cirkewwa and need it to be special.Reply
Hi Brian, I would suggest either heading down to Mellieħa Bay for a place called Munchies (I assure you that it’s much better food than you’d expect from a place bearing that name) or head to Mellieħa centre, for Rebekah’s.

This was awesome. My husband and I will be going in June for 5 nights. What would be your absolute top 5 for us to experience? We will be staying in St Julian’s area. But I don’t care-happy to rent a car or taxi.

Hi Sudi, that’s a very good question and one to which I’ll probably have a slightly different answer for every month. In no particular order, I’d say these are my current top 5:
* La Vecchia Napoli (Sliema or Salini Resort at Salina/Qawra)
* Legligin (Valletta)
* Rebekah’s (Mellieħa)
* Tartarun (Marsaxlokk)
* Munchies (Mellieħa Bay)Reply
Hi Edward, thanks for all the tips. Been to malta a couple of times but do you know of any authentic Maltese restaurants in Bugibba? Thank you and keep up the good work!

Hi Paul, Charlie’s Inn gets good reviews, particularly because of their traditional Maltese rabbit dishes. They’re located just outside of Buġibba/Qawra in a small locality on the coastline, called Salina.

Thank you so much for sharing this experience! We tried Ta ‘ Cassia in Salina and it was very good. Still in Malta so will try others as well.
