You can’t judge a book by its cover, and you can’t judge a restaurant by its exterior or its location. No matter where you travel to within the Sunshine State, locals can often tell you about that “greasy spoon” or “hole in the wall” with the best food in town. A while back, we wrote about the best low-key restaurants in Florida, but there were way too many to fit on just one list. So, we extended the list a bit to highlight some new dining spots, including the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in Florida. Check it out…
1. Red Wing Restaurant, Groveland
You'll want to try everything on the menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (if you dare) at this fine dining restaurant with a homey countryside vibe, located in Central Florida. The Red Wing Restaurant is much more than a hole-in-the-wall steakhouse.
2. Pudgees' Eatery & Market, Floral City
Whether you want an authentic Chicago Dog or a burger so good you'll "Smack Ya Momma,' Pudgees' has you covered (with a side of hand-cut french fries.) This hidden gem is simplicity at its finest. It started as a run-down-looking hole-in-the-wall restaurant going by the name of Pudgees' Hot Dog Stand, but it has been re-born with a nice new building and is known as Pudgee's Eatery and Market now. New look - same great food!
3. Star Fish Company Market & Restaurant, Cortez
It makes sense that an authentic fishing village in Florida would be the best place to get fresh local seafood. The dishes are simple and the setting is casual, but you'll love every bite at the Starfish Company Market.
4. Florida Cracker Kitchen, Brooksville
The Florida Cracker Kitchen wants to remind everyone that Florida does have cowboys and Southern roots. From shrimp and grits to homemade corn beef and hash, this menu will make your mouth water.
5. Sandwich Inn, Gainesville
Sandwich Inn is proud to be the longest-running locally-owned restaurant in Gainesville, serving hungry locals since 1963. Walk up or drive-thru for burgers, shakes, and breakfast sandwiches all day.
6. 12A Buoy, Fort Pierce

If you're always on the lookout for great bar-b-q, Peebles deserves your attention. This humble restaurant has been family-owned since 1947. Peebles has all of your favorite classics, plus BBQ loaded potatoes and salads, all prepared to perfection.
8. Balkan Cafe, Jacksonville
If you like Mediterranean flavors, chances are good that you'll appreciate Balkan food. If you're unsure of what to order, the friendly staff at this hidden gem will be happy to help you find something delicious.
9. DJ's Clam Shack, Key West
DJ's Clam Shack was founded when two fellows from the Northeast living in the Keys decided to blend the best elements of Northern and Southern seafood into one incredible restaurant. Be sure to stop by for the conch fritters or lobster rolls when you're in Key West.
