It is a beef stir fry dish served at Chinese restaurants. The authentic Hunan beef recipe is simple to stir fry with thin slices of beef simmered in soy, chili, garlic, and ginger sauce. These ingredients make a slightly sticky sauce that coats the beef. The dish is often served over steamed rice.

The dish is usually stir fry with fresh long green and red peppers, celery, scallions. You may add any vegetables you like such as onion, carrots, or shallots.

How To Make Beef Hunan Style?

  1. Prepare the beef- Slice the flank steak against the grain (the grain is the length of the steak) the long way 1/4 inch think pieces.
    Next, add the rest of the marinade ingredients, mix well and marinate for 10 minutes (though you could even leave it overnight).
  2. Mix the sauce- Combine all the sauce ingredients in a medium bowl and stir until fully combined. Set aside.
  3. Prepare all the side ingredients, cut peppers, celery, scallions, garlic and ginger.
  4. Pan fry beef- Heat up cooking oil in skillet until really hot and then fry the beef slices for around 30 seconds. Transfer out.
  5. Sauté the aromatics- To the same skillet add the remaining tablespoon of oil, along with the ginger and garlic to the pan and sauté for 10-15 seconds. Then add peppers, celery and scallions to fry for another 10 seconds.
  6. Add the sauce and return beef back and give a quick fry. Transfer and serve with steamed rice immediately.

Hunan Beef Sauce:

  • 1/2 teaspoon Chinese black vinegar
