What do you say at a wine tasting event? ›

Do say: “I can see it's a vibrant purple, this must be a young red”. Don't say: “Look at the legs! This must be a great wine”. This is one of the most crucial parts of wine tasting, because the aromas, perceived only through the nose, are a vital part of our appreciation of a wine.

Organizing Your Club

It is best to keep your group at a manageable size of about eight to 15 people. As the founder, you might find it helpful to begin by creating guidelines for your wine-tasting club. As a result, you are able to set the tone, ground rules and expectations you want for your group.

Sparkling wines like champagne should be ice cold, as cold as beer or soft drinks (38-50 degrees Fahrenheit). For best results, stick the bottles in the freezer an hour before the party begins. White wines should a bit warmer: 44-57 degrees Fahrenheit.

If you think your guests are up for a challenge, host a blind wine tasting at home. Pick about five wines and hide them in paper bags or wine gift bags. Pour two ounces into each guests' glass and let them discuss what they love (or hate!) about the wine.

A selection of cheeses served alongside a good variety of biscuits, grapes, chutney and pickled onions. This is always a 'classic choice' for wine tasting parties and goes down well with guests!

Taste the wine in small sips, not large gulps. Let it swirl in your mouth and enjoy the feel, the texture, and the taste. By swirling it you will get the whole experience and palate of tasting. Also, be observant of what lingers in your mouth after you swallow it or spit it out.

You have to think of the theme of the tasting, choosing the wines, buying the wine which might involve visiting several stores, arranging for the food or snacks (not necessarily cooking), getting out the invitations (it could be as simple as an email list), arranging glassware, providing tasting sheets or notes, ...

One bottle per wine is enough, for up to 12 guests. For 8-10 different wines, that means 8-10 bottles in total. For each additional 12 guests, you will need to have an additional bottle of each wine, to ensure everyone gets a satisfactory pour.

Upon acceptance, pour clockwise (label facing guest) all women first, and then gentlemen, and then host last (male or female). One 750-ml bottle is 25 ounces, and serves four, with wine left over in the bottle.

What to expect at a wine tasting party? ›

You'll find that most tasting rooms will offer pours of 5-6 different types of wine during a single tasting, so if you decide to sip on the wines and take your time, that can take a while, but if you drink them down quickly, you'll be done faster. We recommend taking your time and enjoying each of the different wines.

Thoroughly mash fruit, add four crushed Campden tablets, cover with cheesecloth and allow container to stand four hours at room temperature. Add 10 cups sugar syrup, lemon juice, tea and yeast and allow seven days to ferment at a temperature between 60-70º F, stirring thoroughly twice daily.

To have a great wine-tasting experience, make a reservation beforehand and avoid wearing strong perfumes or heavy makeup. Take your time during the tasting, ask questions, and learn about the wines. Avoid being rude and be respectful to the winery staff and other guests.
